ABOUT ME

About me

  • About me

I was born in Cardiff, capital of Wales. I love being Welsh! Also, my surname reveals paternal Irish roots, while my mother was Scottish. I feel that this all-round Celtic heritage both enlivens my work and adds its own mystical touch.

  • Writing

I have been an avid reader from a small child, when my library ticket was well-used! At school, aged seven, my class began a daily diary. It was love at first write! I immediately started penning a novel. But, petered out after a few chapters. I needed to live more to write more. Soon, though, I made my first foray into journalism: the South Wales Echo published my letter highlighting a dearth of local play parks.

    Encouraged, I persisted!

If it wasn’t a play I was writing, it was a poem or a song or a short story. But it was much later that I finally completed my first novel and then another. When I came to a crossroads in my life I decided the time had come to focus on my writing. I reorganized my life.

    I never looked back!

Within weeks I was holidaying on the Greek island of Corfu. I ended up doing a Shirley Valentine and spent the whole summer there. In the autumn I ventured over to Athens, a city I fell in love with, and found it the perfect place to write! The clincher in my decision to stay there was discovering a Sunday service in English – my Greek was minimal at that point.

    I became a Grecophile.

As a manager for MCM television in Greece, I worked with the stars of Greek popular music. I soon started interviewing these for Athenscope, a city scene magazine. When the magazine invited me to become their contributing editor I jumped at the chance.

I had a baptism of fire producing 12+ articles weekly – including reviews of art exhibitions, films, books, and restaurants, plus travel features and profiles. Over a period of two years I clocked up a whopping four figure portfolio of articles.

After that I started freelancing for just about every publication in English in the city (and some Greek ones) including The Athenian, Hellenic Star, Odyssey and Insider Athens, and became a columnist in the Athens News.

Through my columns, The Feel Good Factor and Body Works, I explored my interest in beauty, health and fitness. Also, I examined a wide variety of alternative therapies and remedies. To read a selection of the above pieces please click on this link: Greek Odyssey – mine!

Alongside this busy and fulfilling period I was very happy to find myself in a country where friends and colleagues were often practicing Christians like me. It was spiritually uplifting living close to the sea, surrounded by God’s beautiful creations. I was inspired to write the book, 9 Days to Heaven, How to make everlasting meaning of your life.

In 2011 I returned to my native Wales, another place blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, where I continue to freelance, write books, and present workshops.

In the coronavirus lockdowns I kept sane by beavering away at my books. The first, a prayer guide, Pray Then Listen, A heart-to-heart with God, actively helped me to stay close to Him at this very trying time. And I hope it will do the same for you. It is down-to-earth and practical, and so easy to use.

Also, immersing myself in finishing my novel Angel at the Paradise Hotel – begun during my Shirley Valentine summer, so mentally time-travelling was the perfect form of escapism – which I hope you will dive into and savour too.
